Whether You “Love Your Job – Or Leave It,” Crush It!
Conceived as a way to tell my story, this website is about my videoblog career series. My intention here is to showcase the numerous careers and jobs I’ve been employed in over the past 40 years.
In “Love Your Job – Or Leave It” you’re going to be able to sample the highs and lows I’ve encountered while working in careers hailed as noble professions through to jobs involving manual labor. Ever a believer in the practical, and possessing a wry sense of humor, I’ll do my best to dress and act the part in each episode. This won’t always be the case though – it’d be impossible to dress up as an undertaker again and demonstrate the sorts of gruesome tasks performed by the dedicated folks in the funeral industry.
It’s relevant here for me to mention Gary Vaynerchuk’s recently released Crush It! I read this inspiring book while flying back to Australia from an Internet Marketing seminar in Las Vegas in October, 2009. It’s a funny thing, but spending $20 because of an impulsive need to get “something to read” during that long haul flight has already proved of far more value than the 1000s of dollars I spent to attend the conference.
Gary lives and breathes his core message of finding your passion, of not being impatient for results, but at the same time hustling far more than others are prepared to, until you eventually break through and Crush It! If you doubt Gary’s popularity and drive, do a search for @garyvee on Twitter (don’t forget to click “more” at the bottom of the list). Note how many of his raving fans instantly retweet (RT) even the most innocuous of his announcements and truisms. Already his Twitter followers are rapidly approaching the 1,000,000 tally – yikes, that’s half the population that New Zealand had when I last lived there 25 years ago! All actively following one human being, and not because a film studio or record label propelled him to celebrity status either. No, masterfully orchestrating today’s social media tools has been all his own (hard) work. And he understands the new buyer behavioral paradigms that will dictate which businesses will succeed or fail.
We want to succeed, right?
Q. How has Gary Vaynerchuk’s philosophy impacted my online business in general and my “Love Your Job – Or Leave It” video series in particular.
A. First, by stressing the importance of personal branding. Second, for the first time in my 40-year working life I now see why I never stayed longer than 7 years in 1 job, and most of my career changes were way less than that! One of the take home messages in Crush It! is that continuing to work in a job you hate or that doesn’t fit your DNA is insanity.
Hey, that’s enough from me about Gary Vee – go buy his book and get lit up yourself. Can’t do any harm.
Anyhoo, since you’re here why not check out my videos? I’m having fun making them and I hope you find something useful too.
